The origin of Chat is disputed. Some believe it was originated in Kolkatta while others root for Delhi. While a more popular tale is that it was invented in Agra in the kitchens of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is believed that his cook came up with it when he was ill and was instructed to eat something light.
Chat is now popular throughout India in various forms with ingredients like potatoes, curd, sweet and spicy chutneys, and a blend of spices to add zest to the dish.
Chat Masala is used as an instant flavour enhancer, sprinkled on salads, fruits, pakoras and added to drinks like lemonade and fizzy drinks.
